Area Served[]

The Colton Fire Department (CFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Colton, a suburb of the City of San Bernardino, situated approximately 4 miles south of that city's downtown. in the Inland Empire region of San Bernardino County, Southern California, The city is named after David Douty Colton, a Union brigadier general during the Civil War and later vice president of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company which ran through the city. Incorporated as a city in 1887, Colton has a population of 54,828 and encompasses an area covering 16.0 square miles, Colton is bordered by the City of San Bernardino to the northeast, the City of Loma Linda to the east, the City of Grand Terrace and the unincorporated community of Highgrove to the south, the City of Fontana to the west, and the City of Rialto to the northwest.

Mutual Aid[]

The Colton Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the Fontana Fire Protection District, the Loma Linda Fire Department, the Redlands Fire Department, and the Rialto Fire Department.

Department Profile[]

The Colton Fire Department is budgeted for 41 full-time firefighters, one executive assistant, one contract physician medical director, and two volunteers, and has a daily staffing of 13 firefighters. Its resources include four fire stations, a four story, 1,280 square foot training tower, and five front-line emergency apparatus. These are comprised of three paramedic engine companies, one paramedic aerial ladder truck company, and one battalion chief vehicle, working three 24-hour alternating shifts. Each fire engine as well as the ladder truck is staffed with one captain, one engineer, and one firefighter/paramedic and all are Basic Life Support (BLS) certified. CFD also cross staffs one Type 3 wildland company, one incident support / technical rescue unit, one OES Type 1 engine company, one OES Type 6 brush patrol unit, and one OES water tender. The Colton Fire Department shares command staff resources with the neighboring Loma Linda Fire Department. Colton Fire responds to over 7,200 calls for service annually, with over 80% consisting of EMS calls,

Dispatch[]

The Colton Fire Department is a member of a regional fire and emergency services communication system called CONFIRE Joint Powers Authority (JPA), commonly referred to as "Comm Center", and located in the City of Rialto, which provides dispatch services for nine fire agencies, as well as for four contract agencies in San Bernardino County.

History[]

The Colton Fire Department was formed on November 21, 1889, as a volunteer fire department with a thousand feet of 2 ½ inch rubber hose, a cart to carry the hose and 3 Edison electric fire extinguishers. In 1948, the department consisted of a fire chief and eight paid firemen, augmented by volunteers. By 1955, the Department was fully paid and no longer relied on the services of volunteers. Colton has provided paramedic Advanced Life Support (ALS) to its citizens as one of the first paramedic providers in San Bernardino County since July 1975.
