Area Served[]

The Chino Valley Fire District (CVFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Chino, the City of Chino Hills, and surrounding unincorporated county areas, all located in the western and southwestern part of the Inland Empire metropolitan area in San Bernardino County, Southern California. "Chino" means "curl" in Spanish in reference the top of the grama grass that abounded in the valley in its early days. Chino Valley Fire is an independent fire district governed by an elected five-member Board of Directors, and encompasses an area covering 80.0 square miles, while serving a population of approximately 178,000 inhabitants. CVFD is bordered by the City of Montclair to the north; the City of Ontario to the northeast; the City of Eastvale in Riverside County to the southeast; Orange County to the southwest; and Los Angeles County to the northwest.

Mutual Aid[]

CVFD has mutual aid agreements with, among others, the CAL FIRE San Bernardino Unit, the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the Montclair Fire Department, the Ontario Fire Department, the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District, the Rialto Fire Department, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the Orange County Fire Authority, the CAL FIRE Riverside Unit, and the Corona Fire Department in Riverside County.

Department Profile[]

The Chino Valley Fire District is budgeted for 144 sworn personnel. Daily staffing consists of a shift battalion chief and 36 suppression personnel operating seven medic engines, five paramedic squads, one ladder truck, and a shift battalion chief vehicle out of seven fire stations. CVFD also cross staffs one Type 6 and three Type 3 wildland companies (one of the Type 3s is OES owned), one Type 2 hazardous materials response unit, one Type 2 Urban Search and Rescue unit, one water tender, and a swift water rescue team. The Chino Valley Fire District does not provide EMS and ambulance transport services as part of its mandate. All EMS and transport is provided under contract by American Medical Response (AMR). CVFD responds to over 12,000 calls a year, the majority of which are medical calls.

Dispatch[]

The Chino Valley Fire District is a member of a regional fire and emergency services communication system called CONFIRE Joint Powers Authority (JPA), commonly referred to as "Comm Center", and located in the City of Rialto, which provides dispatch services for nine fire agencies, as well as for four contract agencies in San Bernardino County.

History[]

The Chino Fire Company No. 1. was formed on May 25, 1895 after a group of businessmen organized fire protection for the fledging community in the form of a hose, hand pumps, and a hook-and-ladder cart. In 1910, a fire commission was established when the city of Chino was incorporated on February 28 of that year. The Chino Fire Department responded to city as well as rural district fire alarms, covering an area within a 93 square mile radius. In 1924, the City of Chino fathers decided that its fire department should be a paid department however, the city still maintained 24 non-paid volunteer firemen. In 1935, the Chino Rural Fire Department was formed as a separate entity.
