Area Served[]

The City of Chico Fire-Rescue Department (CFRD) provides fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, basic life support (BLS), advanced life support (ALS) and fire prevention for the city of Chico. The department also provides aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) service to the Chico Municipal Airport. Chico, a Spanish word meaning "little", is the most populous city in Butte County, located in the Sacramento Valley region of Northern California. Butte County EMS provides ALS pre-hospital care and transportation for the department under a joint venture between Enloe Medical Center and First Responder Emergency Medical Services. The city is known as a college town, as the home of California State University, Chico, and for Bidwell Park, one of the largest urban parks in the world.

Mutual Aid[]

CFRD maintains an automatic aid agreement with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the Butte County Fire Department, and provides first response to emergencies in the surrounding unincorporated area through the Chico Urban Area Fire and Rescue Agreement.

Department Profile[]

The Chico Fire Department was established in 1873. Today, CFRD serves a population of approximately 107,640. and covers an area of 27.8 square miles characterized by an urban and suburban community mix and is comprised of the following units:

  • 5 Fire Stations
  • 1 Fire Training Center
  • 6 Engine Companies (4 Type 1 & 2 Type 3 wildland engines)
  • 1 Truck Company
  • 1 Technical Rescue apparatus (cross-staffed from Truck Company)
  • 1 ARFF (aircraft rescue) apparatus (cross-staffed from first responding surrounding fire station)
  • 1 Squad / Rapid Response Medical Response apparatus (cross-staffed)
  • 1 Hazardous Materials apparatus (cross-staffed)

Chico Fire-Rescue fields specialized teams for technical rescues, drowning accidents, and hazardous materials response. Paramedics support these teams and serve on the Police SWAT Team.
