Department Profile[]

The Chicago Fire Department (CFD) was established on August 2, 1858 and is one of the oldest major organized departments in the United States. It provides both fire suppression and emergency medical services for the city of Chicago, Illinois. The CFD is the second largest municipal fire department in the US after the Fire Department of the City of New York as measured by sworn personnel. CFD has 4,500 total employees who respond to over 800,000 emergency calls annually, making it the second busiest department in the country. The Chicago FD protects a population of approximately 2.7 million residents over an area of 234 square miles.

Bureaus[]

There are four Bureaus within the Chicago Fire Department: Operations, Administrative Services, Logistics and Fire Prevention. The four Bureaus are commanded by the 1^st Deputy Commissioner, who in turn reports to the Commissioner.

Bureau of Operations[]

The Bureau of Operations is the largest Bureau within the Chicago Fire Department. The Bureau of Operations commands the following Divisions: Fire Suppression & Rescue, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Special Operations Command, and the Office of Fire Investigation (OFI). The Bureau of Operations is composed of over 4,500 Firefighters and Paramedics and is commanded by a Deputy Commissioner.

The Bureau of Fire Prevention commands the following Divisions: Code Compliance and Inspections. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is commanded by a Deputy Commissioner.

Bureau of Administration[]

The Bureau of Administration commands the following Divisions: Personnel, Training, the Photo Unit, and the Employee Assistance Program. Administration is commanded by a Deputy Commissioner.

Bureau of Logistics[]

The Bureau of Logistics commands the following Divisions: Support Services, Support & Logistics (EMS), Equipment & Supply, Building & Property Management, Record, Employee Relations, Labor Relations, Staff/Human Relations, the Pension Board, the Regulatory Compliance, and Management Information Systems/Technology. The Bureau of Logistics is commanded by a Deputy Commissioner.

Organization of Operations[]

The Bureau of Operations of the Chicago Fire Department is organized into 5 fire districts, (1st,2nd,3rd,4th and 5th Fire Districts) with the 3rd Fire District located in the Airport Operations Division of the CFD. The 1st,2nd and 5th Fire Districts have Six Battalions. The 3rd Fire District/Airport Operations Division has One Battalion and the 4th Fire District has Five Battalions. There is also One Special Operations Battalion. The CFD currently operates out of 96 Firehouses organized into 24 firefighting Battalions plus a Special Operations Battalion and is comprised of the following units:

History[]

Volunteer fire companies were first established in Chicago in 1832, prior to the city's 1837 incorporation. The paid department was established by ordinance on August 2, 1858. Chicago was one of the very first fire departments in the US to paint their trucks in a black-over-red color scheme, dating back to the late 1920s; when the CFD purchased 28 Ford Model As to serve as chief cars. The canvas roofs of the cars were covered in tar (used to waterproof the fabric), and couldn't be painted red, so they were left black. Eventually, the black & red coloring made its' way over to Chicago's other apparatus, and the rest is history. The Chicago Fire Department is also known for having distinct red & green lights on the fronts of their apparatus, in another tradition that dates back to the 1920s. The family of the fire commissioner at the time (Albert Goodrich) owned a steamship line, and the boats had red & green lights denoting the port and starboard sides of the ships, used at nighttime and during bad weather to aid safe passing & navigation (a practice which is still a maritime requirement today). As a nod to his nautical heritage, Commissioner Goodrich had the red & green lights installed on all of Chicago's fleet, and the practice still continues to this day. ^[1]
