Central York Fire Services

History

Central York Fire Services was formed on January 1, 2002 through the consolidation of the Aurora Fire Department and the Newmarket Fire Department. The consolidation was a collaboration by the Towns of Aurora and Newmarket, management of the fire departments and the two labour representatives - the Aurora Professional Firefighters Association and the Newmarket Professional Firefighters Association.

Department Profile

Central York Fire Services is a full time department that provides protection to the Towns of Aurora and Newmarket, in York Region, Ontario, Canada. CYFS serves a combined population of approximately 146,000 and covers an area of 90 km². The department responds to approximately 5,000 emergency calls each year. CYFS currently operates out of five fire stations, three in Aurora and two in Newmarket, and is made up of the following:

• Senior Officers - 4 staff
• Administration Division - 5 staff
• Fire Prevention Division - 7 staff
• Fire Suppression Division - 136 staff on four platoons
• Training Division - 3 staff

Fire protection to portions of Newmarket west of Bathurst Street are contracted to King Fire & Emergency Services. Areas in both Newmarket and Aurora east of Highway 404 are protected by Whitchurch-Stouffville Fire and Emergency Services.

Apparatus 411, 421, 427, 431, 441, 451 and 456 operate as 24/7 career staffed trucks. The remaining units are cross-staffed and/or spare apparatus.
