Area Served[]

The Central Fire District of Santa Cruz County provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the Town of Capitola, as well as for the unincorporated communities of Aptos, La Selva Beach, Live Oak, Rio Del Mar, and Soquel, all located on the edge of Monterey Bay in Santa Cruz County, Central California. The district protects a resident population of approximately 90,500 inhabitants, while covering an area of 55 square miles. Central Fire District has a publicly elected Board of Directors consisting of five members who are elected to four year staggered terms. The district is bordered by the City of Santa Cruz and by the unincorporated community of Pasatiempo to the west; by the City of Scotts Valley to the northwest; by the California State Park's Forest of Nisene Marks and the Santa Cruz Mountains to the northeast; by the unincorporated community of Corralitos to the east; the City of Watsonville to the southeast; and Monterey Bay to the south/southwest

Mutual Aid[]

The Central Fire District of Santa Cruz County has mutual aid agreements with the CAL FIRE San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit, the Santa Cruz County Fire Department, the Felton Fire Protection District, the Pajaro Valley Fire Protection District, the Santa Cruz Fire Department, the Scotts Valley Fire Protection District, and the Watsonville Fire Department.

Department Profile[]

The Central Fire District of Santa Cruz County is budgeted for 120 active employees and operates out of seven fire stations. The District's chief officers, including the Assistant Fire Chief and Division Chiefs, provide augmented duty coverage supporting the district’s shift battalion chiefs in emergency response and program management oversight. CFD of Santa Cruz County consists of an Administrative Division, an Operations Division, a Fleet Services Division (Logistics), a Training and Safety Division, and a Community Risk Reduction Division. The District has many firefighters cross-trained in multiple specialty disciplines, including 9 Hazardous Materials Technicians, 29 Rescue Swimmers, 12 Technical Rescue Technicians and 9 Truck Operators. The District responds to requests for service for structural fire suppression, wildland-urban interface firefighting, advanced life support emergency medical services, aquatic rescue, over-the-edge (angled) rescue, and urban search and rescue services and handled 8,712 calls for service during 2022, 5,240 of which were of a medical nature.

History[]

Sometime prior to 2018, the Central Fire Protection District and the Aptos-La Selva Fire Protection District entered into a Shared Services Agreement to combine their Administrative and Prevention/ Community Risk Reduction divisions. On February 4, 2021, Central FPD and Aptos-La Selva FPD consolidated, resulting in the creation of the Central Fire District of Santa Cruz County.
