All fire departments in York Region follow a 3-digit numbering system for the apparatus. The first digit represents the municipality, the second digit is the station number, and the third digit identifies the type of apparatus.

Each digit is pronounced individually. For example 836 is pronounced eight-three-six, not eight-thirty-six and 759 is pronounced seven-five-nine, not seven-fifty-nine and so on.
- Note: Some apparatus have 4 digits. Same as the 3-digits, Vaughan's 710-1 is pronounced seven-ten-one and Bradford's 1017 is pronounced ten-one-seven, not ten-seventeen.
