History[]
On March 1st, 1140, a newly established government led by Afonso Henriques declared the formation of the Kingdom of Portugal, encompassing lands between the Minho River to the north and the Algarve to the south, with the Atlantic Ocean serving as the western boundary and the mountains of León marking the eastern frontier. On October 5, 1143, Portugal’s independence was formally recognized by the Kingdom of León, ending the period of territorial disputes in the Iberian Peninsula.
