Vehicles with a military designation are generally produced by a variety of manufacturers, all built to the same specification and standards.

Used and Surplus military vehicles in the United States are donated under The Federal Surplus Personal Property Donation Program. In Canada, sale and donation of equipment is controlled under the Surplus Crown Assets Act.
