
The Bureau of Land Management, or BLM, is part of the United States Department of the Interior. It administers over a million square kilometres of public lands, mostly located in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
Among its other responsibilities, BLM is responsible for wildland firefighting on the lands that it administers. BLM employs thousands of firefighters and support personnel, directed from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) in Boise, Idaho.
As of 2025, the BLM firefighting fleet consists of approximately 413 pieces of dedicated wildland fire equipment The fleet is broken down into:
- 276 Engines
- 59 Crew Carriers
- 23 Dozer Crews
- 12 Water Tenders
- 2 Fire Boats
Wildland Fire Program[]
The Bureau of Land Management Wildland Fire Program is divided into 12 State Programs, which is then subdivided into respective District and Field offices, further divided into Fire Management Zones. BLM Fire holds one of largest and most complex fire program within the Department of the Interior. The Bureau maintains a number of modules including:

History[]
In 2018 the Department of the Interior completed its re-organization of its 49 regions across 8 bureaus to 12 unified Interior Regions. This re-organization moved the existing 9 BLM districts into the 12 unified regions.
