The Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District (CSFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Carpinteria, the community of Summerland, and the unincorporated lands within southeastern Santa Barbara County. Located on California's central coast, some 10 miles south of the city of Santa Barbara, the district encompasses an area covering 40 square miles from the Pacific Ocean to extreme elevations in the adjoining Los Padres National Forest, and from Rincon Creek at the Santa Barbara County/Ventura County line to Ortega Hill, near the city of Santa Barbara. It serves a population of more than 17,000. The district is bordered by the Montecito Fire District on the northwest, the Los Padres National Forrest and the Santa Ynez Mountains on the east, the Ventura County boundary on the southeast, and the Pacific Ocean on the west.
Mutual Aid[]
Carpinteria-Summerland FPD has mutual aid agreements with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the Santa Barbara City Fire Department, the Montecito Fire Protection District, the Ventura County Fire Department, and the United States Forest Service.
Department Profile[]
The Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District is a paid department budgeted for 28 safety suppression personnel, 3 fire prevention personnel and 2 administrative assistants. The department has a daily staffing of eight personnel per shift working out of two fire stations. The minimum staffing is four firefighters and one battalion chief at Fire Station #1 in Carpinteria and three firefighters at Fire Station #2 in Summerland. Its resources include four front-line emergency vehicles comprised of two Type 1 engine companies, one rescue squad, and one battalion chief vehicle, working three 24-hour rotating shifts. In addition. CSFD cross staffs one Type 3 wildland company, one OES Type 1 engine company, a Hazmat / MCI trailer, one water rescue craft with a tow vehicle, part of a water rescue team consisting of 12 firefighters who are trained in both open-ocean and swift water technical rescue, and five staff/utility vehicles. CSFD responded to 1087 incidents in 2021, 75% of which were medical calls.
