Area Served[]

The Camp Pendleton Fire and Emergency Services Department (CPFES) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, the major west coast base of the United States Marine Corps and one of the largest Marine Corps bases in the United States. It is located in northern San Diego County and bordered by the City of Oceanside to the south, the City of San Clemente, and Orange County to the north, Riverside County to the northeast, the unincorporated city of Fallbrook to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Camp Pendleton is named in honor of Major General Joseph Henry Pendleton (June 2, 1860 – February 4, 1942), who led USMC operations in southern California during his 46 years of military service. The base occupies more than 135,000 acres, ranging from rolling hills to steep mountains with heavy brush, lakes, and approximately 17 miles of Pacific Ocean shoreline with bluffs. 17 miles of Interstate 5 highway traverses the west side of the base. MCB Camp Pendleton has a resident population of 50,000 military and dependent personnel, plus an additional 60,000 personnel who work on the base. Camp Pendleton is home to a myriad of USMC general and special purpose units, including the 1st. Marine Expeditionary Force, as well as various training commands.

Mutual Aid[]

The Camp Pendleton Fire and Emergency Services Department has mutual aid agreements with the Carlsbad Fire Department (California), the North County Fire Protection District (San Diego County, California), the Oceanside Fire Department (California), the Pala Fire Department, and the Orange County Fire Authority (California).

Department Profile[]

The Camp Pendleton Fire and Emergency Services Department provides structural as well as wildland fire suppression, advanced life support (ALS), emergency medical services (EMS), technical rescue, hazmat services, fire prevention and inspection to the MCB Camp Pendleton community. The department is comprised of over 200 federal civilian career firefighters, who provide all services except for aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) at co-located Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton / Munn Field, which is provided by USMC enlisted personnel with Military Occupation Specialist (MOS) rating 7051 (Expeditionary Firefighting and Rescue (EFR) Specialist) assigned to the Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Division. CPFES responds to more than 4,000 incidents annually from 10 fire stations, the ARFF station, and a seasonal brush station in Case Springs that is cross staffed with United States Forest Service fire fighters. Daily staffing is 67 and stations 1-9 are all equipped with a Type 1, Type 3, and Type 6I engines due those stations being located near training areas. The department maintains several specialty teams, including a swift-water rescue team, a team trained in Heli-tac operations, a technical rescue group, as well as a hazardous materials team.

History[]

On August 1, 2017, Camp Pendleton along with other northern San Diego County departments re-numbered their stations and apparatus to be compatible with the CAD software in use by the dispatch agency, to align with an overall county-wide numbering system. The purpose behind this change was to implement a designator system that helped eliminate confusion and errors for departments in the zone/county with similar unit designators. Pendleton was assigned number 270-279 and 288.
