Marine Corps Base Camp Camp Lejeune, formerly Marine Barracks New River, is a 246-square-mile United States Marine Corps installation and training facility located in Jacksonville, Onslow County, North Carolina, that wraps itself around the New River tidal estuary and borders the Atlantic Ocean. The base is named in honor of Lieutenant General John Archer Lejeune (January 10, 1867 – November 20, 1942), nicknamed the "greatest of all Leathernecks" and the "Marine's Marine," the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps. It is the home of the 2nd Marine Division (2nd MARDIV) of the United States Marine Corps, which forms the ground combat element of the II Marine Expeditionary Force (II MEF), the 2nd Marine Logistics Group and multiple other combat units and support commands, as well as several entry-level and career-level schools. Camp Lejeune with its various satellite camps, housing and training areas is the largest concentration of marines and sailors in the world. The main base is supplemented by six satellite facilities: Marine Corps Air Station New River (Helicopter and tilt-rotor aircraft in support of II MEF's air operations), Camp Geiger (Marine Combat Training at the School of Infantry), Stone Bay, Courthouse Bay (Marine Corps Engineer School and the Joint Maritime Training Center), Camp Johnson, and the Greater Sandy Run Training Area. Camp Lejeune encompasses 156,000 acres with a mix of pine forests, calm river shores, 14 miles of coastline available for amphibious assault as well as ground training, 32 gun positions, 48 tactical landing zones, three state-of-the-art training facilities for Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) and 80 live fire ranges of which the Greater Sandy Run Training Area is one.

Department Profile[]

Established in 1941, Camp Lejeune Fire and Emergency Services provides structural as well as wildlife fire suppression, advanced life support (ALS), emergency medical service (EMS), technical rescue, hazmat services, fire prevention and inspection onboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The department is comprised of 157 civilian career firefighters working out of 10 fire stations however, aircraft rescue and firefighting for MCAS New River is provided by USMC enlisted personnel assigned to the MCAS New River Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Division. The department also responds to mutual aid requests in surrounding communities.

History[]

In April 1941, construction was approved on an 11,000-acre tract in Onslow County, North Carolina. On May 1 of that year, Lt. Col. William P. T. Hill began construction on Marine Barracks New River. The first base headquarters was in a summer cottage on Montford Point and then moved to Hadnot Point in 1942. Later that year it was renamed in honor of the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, John A. Lejeune. One of the satellite facilities of Camp Lejeune served for a while as a third boot camp for the Marines, in addition to Parris Island and San Diego. That facility, Montford Point, was established after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802. Between 1942 and 1949, a brief era of segregated training for black Marines, the camp at Montford Point trained 20,000 African-Americans. After the military was ordered to fully integrate, Montford Point was renamed Camp Gilbert H. Johnson and became the home of the Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools.
