History[]
The Calgary Fire Department originated as the Calgary Hook, Ladder and Bucket Corps on August 25th, 1885.
The City of Calgary annexed three adjoining towns in the early 1960s, bringing their fire departments into the CFD. These included:
- The Town of Forest Lawn on December 30, 1961, adding the Forest Lawn Fire Department
- The Town of Montgomery on August 15, 1963, adding the Montgomery Fire Department
- The Town of Bowness on August 15, 1964, adding the Bowness Fire Department.
Calgary Fire began ambulance service in 1971 with the staffing of 8 ambulances with 51 personnel. In 1983, after labour issues raised concerns with the ambulance service, the City of Calgary Fire Department Ambulance Services became a separate department within the City and was renamed the City of Calgary Emergency Medical Services.[1]

Bid Requests[]
The City of Calgary called RFP 23-1646 for a multi-year contract to supply new pumpers and rescue apparatus. The initial agreement will be for a five-year term to start, with the possibility for a four-year extension. The City intends to purchase 45 new pumpers over the next nine years, plus 10-20 rescue apparatus. The deadline for submissions was 19 September 2024.

Future Plans[]
- Four existing rescue companies are to be converted to ladder companies.
- Station 1 (Downtown) is in the process of being replaced by two smaller stations. A new Station 1 in Bridgeland and a new station in Inglewood (Station 3) at 11 Avenue SE & 12 Street SE. Construction is not yet underway.
- Station 17 (Varsity) is to be replaced by a new multi-services station on the same site. Construction started in June, 2022 and completion is anticipated in mid-to-late 2025.
- Station 38 (Skyview) is to be replaced by a new multi-services station in Cornerstone. Construction is anticipated to start in mid 2025.
- Station 36 (Hidden Valley) is to be replaced by a new facility in Hidden Valley. Construction is anticipated to start in late 2026.
- Station 12 (Forest Heights) is to be replaced by a new facility in Forest Lawn. Construction is anticipated to start in late 2026. Station will be located on the block between 44 Street SE, 52 Street SE and 8 Avenue SE, 14 Avenue SE.
- Station 27 (Stonegate) will receive a new hall at 80 Avenue and 36 St NE. Anticipated completion is 2026.
- Station 43 will receive a permanent hall anticipated in 2026.
- Temporary Station 46 will open at an unknown date in Belmont.
- Temporary Station 47 will open in Hotchkiss near 2025. This will also bring the return of Engine 47.
