The Calexico Fire Department (CFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Calexico, situated directly along the US / Mexico International border, some 120 miles east of the City of San Diego, and some 62 miles west of Yuma, Arizona, in the Imperial Valley of Imperial County, Southern California. The name of the city is a blend of California and Mexico. Calexico’s border port of entry is a major entrance point for thousands of persons as well as large amounts of goods traveling between the two countries. Incorporated as a city on April 16, 1908, Calexico encompasses an area covering 8.62 square miles and serves a population of approximately 38,633. Calexico is bordered by the unincorporated town of Heber to the north-northwest; by the Heber Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) of the California Department of Parks and Recreation / California State Parks to the east; by the Mexican city of Mexicali, the capital of the State of Baja California, across the border to the south; and by the unincorporated town of Mount Signal to the west.

The Calexico Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with the Imperial County Fire Department, the El Centro Fire Department. the Holtville Fire Department, the CAL FIRE San Diego Unit, and the H. Cuerpo de Bomberos de Mexicali across the border.
Department Profile[]
The Calexico Fire Department is budgeted for 25 personnel (1 Fire Chief, 6 Fire Captains, 7 Fire Engineers, 9 Firefighters, 1 Fire Inspector and 1 non-sworn administrative assistant / support staff). Daily staffing is seven personnel, augmented by three additional part-time firefighters during daytime hours. Its resources include two fire stations and four front-line emergency apparatus. These are comprised of two engine companies (or one engine and one aerial ladder company), one ALS transport ambulance, and one fire chief's command vehicle, working three 24-hour rotating shifts. Each fire engine is staffed with one captain, one engineer, and one firefighter; with at least one member of the crew certified as a paramedic. The ambulance is staffed with a combination of one firefighter / paramedic, and one firefighter / Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). CFD also cross staffs an aerial ladder company, a Type 3 wildland engine company, and a hazardous material support trailer, an OES USAR trailer. Calexico Fire responds to over 5,000 calls annually, with over 80% consisting of EMS calls.
