The former Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is located near Wainwright, Alberta. CFB Wainwright was reduced to an Area Support Unit (ASU) during the defense cuts of the 1990's. The base covers an area of over 600 square kilometres and serves as the primary army training facility for western Canada, particularly units based at CFB Edmonton. As part of 1 Area Support Group (ASG) it is host to the Land Force Western Area Training Centre, the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, a helipad and an airfield.

In 2013 Land Force Western Area was re-designated as the 3rd Canadian Division. The former CFB Wainwright fire department was taken over by 3rd Canadian Division Support Group.
