Area Served[]

The CAL FIRE San Bernardino Unit (CAL FIRE BDU) is comprised of San Bernardino, Inyo and Mono counties. The unit protects State Responsibility Areas (SRA), and cities under contract. The unit is spread through four counties spanning the state from central California in the eastern Sierras to the counties of Los Angeles and San Bernardino bordering the Pacific Ocean. The unit's service area includes the San Bernardino mountains, the eastern end of the San Gabriel mountains, and the Owens Valley. Elevations range from approximately 1,200 feet at the San Bernardino valley floor to over 10,000 feet. Owens Valley is in east-central California, between the Sierra Nevada on the west and the White Mountains on the east, and includes the area drained by the Owens River and its tributaries. The Owens Valley bottom comprises the bulk of the SRA land in Inyo County, with an average elevation of 3,700 feet. The San Bernardino and San Gabriel Mountains are transverse ranges lying north of the San Bernardino and Los Angeles basins. They are characterized by a typical Mediterranean climate which can be very dry during the summer months with the bulk of precipitation coming during the winter months. The total unit acreage is 1,408,000 of SRA, plus 22,756 acres of wildland contracts, located within San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Inyo, and Mono counties. The counties have multiple public lands within their response area, which include the Bureau of Land Management, National Forest, National Park Service, US Fish and Wildlife, California State Parks, and local county parks.

Mutual Aid[]

CAL FIRE BDU has mutual aid agreements with the United States Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, San Bernardino National Forest Fire Suppression, the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the Apple Valley Fire Protection District, the Colton Fire Department, the Loma Linda Fire Department, the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District, the Redlands Fire Department, the Running Springs Fire Department, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Fire Department, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the CAL FIRE Riverside Unit / Riverside County Fire Department, the Inyo County Volunteers, the Chino Valley Fire District, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Big Pine Fire Protection District, the Bishop Volunteer Fire Department, the Independence Volunteer Fire Department, the Lone Pine Fire Department and the Mono County Volunteers.

History[]

In August 1930, San Bernardino County entered into a contract with the state of California to provide fire suppression and prevention on non-federal lands within the county. In addition to responsibilities within San Bernardino County, in the late 1980s the State Responsibility Area land within Inyo and Mono forestry units were consolidated under the San Bernardino, California Department of Forestry, Ranger Unit. In accordance with the 2020-21 California state budget, the Pilot Rock Conservation Camp 15 was closed and depopulated.[1] The Pilot Rock CC was later re-opened as the Pilot Rock Fire Center with an official ribbon cutting on June 12, 2024.
