Area Served[]

The Fresno-Kings Unit (FKU) of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection / CAL FIRE provides fire protection and life safety services in an area encompassing both Fresno and Kings Counties in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley in Central California. The Fresno-Kings Unit has responsibility for protecting 955,167 State Responsibility Area acres of land, while covering a very diverse geographic area. It extends from approximately the 4,000-foot elevation in the Coastal Range on the western side of the unit. It then drops to near sea level through the San Joaquin Valley and then climes again to approximately the 7,300-foot elevation in the Sierra Nevada Range on the eastern side. The State of California has a cooperative fire protection agreement with the Fresno County Fire Protection District (FCFPD), and as part of that contract, the CAL FIRE Fresno-Kings Unit oversees the day-to-day operation of the Fire District and protects 1,626,782 acres of Local Responsibility land ranging from rural to urban. Geographically, the unit is divided nearly in half by the San Joaquin Valley. To facilitate this, the unit is divided into two operational divisions. The Eastern Division expands from the floor of the San Joaquin Valley, along the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada and incorporates two of Central California’s major watersheds, the Kings and San Joaquin Rivers. The Eastern Division contains three lake recreation areas, Shaver Lake, Millerton Lake, and Pine Flat Lake, and also contains two population centers, the Shaver Lake / Prather area, and the Squaw Valley / Dunlap area. The Western Division is made up of the eastern slope of the Coastal Mountain Range.
