British Columbia Wildfire Service

The BC Wildfire Service is an agency of the British Columbia Provincial Government, part of the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, tasked with preventing and fighting wildfires. It was formed in 1912 as the British Columbia Forest Service.

British Columbia is divided into six regions, each served by a fire centre, which oversee the Fire Bases in their zone. The regions are:

  • Cariboo (Williams Lake)
  • Coastal (Parksville)
  • Kamloops
  • Northwest (Smithers)
  • Prince George
  • Southeast (Castlegar)

The Provincial Wildfire Coordination Centre (PWCC) is located in Kamloops.

Wildfires are fought using Type 1 firefighters employed by the Ministry, after which Type 2 firefighters provided by approved companies on contract to the government will mop-up and patrol the area.
