History[]

The Gallatin Canyon Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1971. In 1979, two Gallatin Canyon Rural Fire Districts were formed to cover both Gallatin County and Madison County. Despite being separate governmental entities, they all operated as one agency. The agency started to operate the district's EMS services in 1993. In 1994, it was discovered that having two separate districts was improper and so it was corrected by consolidating the two districts into one. In 2009, Gallatin Canyon Consolidated Rural Fire District was renamed into the Big Sky Fire Department. 2011 brought some big changes for the department, staffing Station 1 with three full-time employees.
