Department Profile[]
The Big Island Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. is a volunteer fire company located in an unincorporated area of Bedford County, Virginia known as Big Island. The department was chartered in 1951 and operates out of one station. The department provides first due fire protection to northern Bedford County, western Amherst County and mutual aid to southeastern Rockbridge County. Four major roadways--US Route 501, VA Route 122, VA Route 130, and the Blue Ridge Parkway--travel through the Big Island area.
