Barton-American was an American fire pump manufacturer located in Battle Creek, Michigan.
History[]
In 1922 Benjamin Barton patented a small centrifugal pump which could be easily attached to the motor of any automobile. He took his design to the American Steam Pump Company (later American-Marsh Pumps) who manufactured them as the Barton-American Fire Pump. These pumps proved to be popular and by the late 1920s were being made in sizes from 125gpm to 500gpm. In later years, pumps as large as 1250gpm were available.
In 1937, the American Fire Apparatus Company was established to build complete pumping apparatus using Barton-American pumps. Parent company American-Marsh continued to offer separate Barton-American pumps to other apparatus manufacturers.
Barton-American was acquired by UK based Godiva Fire Pumps Co in 1986. In 1992 Hale Fire Pumps merged with Godiva. Now a part of Hale Products Inc, the Barton-American name is not currently in use.
