Aviano Air Base or Base Aerea di Aviano is an Italian Air Force station in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy, The base is located in the Aviano municipality at the foot of the Carnic Pre-Alps, about 9.3 miles from the commune of Pordenone. The Italian Air Force has ownership as well as administrative and military control of the base however, the United States Air Force has had a presence at Aviano since 1966. The USAF host wing, since 1994, has been the 31st Fighter Wing, the only U.S. fighter wing south of the Alps. This strategic location makes the wing critical to operations in NATO's southern region.
