Athens Fire & Rescue serves the city of Athens, Alabama, and is currently comprised of approximately 53 full-time firefighters working a 24/48 shift pattern, most of whom are licensed EMT-B or higher. The department covers a little over 40 square miles of city limits, with a rapidly growing population of approximately 26,000. AFR currently maintains an ISO Class 2 rating, and responds to all fire related incidents, significant medical emergencies, motor vehicle crashes, and any other special circumstance incidents within the city. Additionally, AFR provides mutual aid to several neighboring volunteer departments for larger or technical incidents, as well as responding countywide for all hazmat incidents
