Area Served[]

The Artois Volunteer Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the unincorporated city of Artois, formerly known as Germantown, as well as for the Artois Fire Protection District, both located five miles north of the City of Willows, in Glenn County, in the northern Sacramento Valley of California. The city's name was derived from a region of northern France.. Artois encompasses an area covering 2.88 square miles and serves a population of approximately 295 inhabitants. The district is bordered by the Orland Rural Fire Protection District to the north; unincorporated Hamilton City and the the Hamilton City Fire Protection District to the northeast; the Ord Fire Protection District as well as the Bayliss Fire Protection District to the east; the City of Willows and the Willows Fire Protection District to the south; and the Kanawha Fire Protection District to the west.

Mutual Aid[]

The Artois Volunteer Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with the Glenn-Colusa Fire Protection District, the Glenn-Codora Fire Protection District, the Bayliss Fire Protection District, the Hamilton City Fire Protection District, the Kanawha Fire Department (California), the Orland Volunteer Fire Department, the Willows Fire Department, and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection/CAL FIRE Tehama-Glenn Unit.

Department Profile[]

The Artois Volunteer Fire Department is a volunteer department which is budgeted for a fire chief, two assistant fire chiefs, three fire captains and 22 volunteers, some half of which are active. The department responded to 137 calls for service in 2023, 57 of which were medical calls.

History[]

The Artois Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1938 with the purchase of a fire truck. The Artois Fire Protection District was formed in 1942
