In 1983 the Arden and Carmicheal Fire Protection Districts merged to form American River Fire Protection District. 4 other fire protection districts later merged into American River;
- Arcade in 1986
- Sloughhouse and Rio Linda-Elverta in 1990
- Florin in 1997
On December 1, 2000 the American River Fire Protection District and the Sacramento County Fire Protection District merged to form the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.
