Ambulance Types[]
Ambulance types are classified based on the type of chassis they utilize. These can include light/medium duty trucks, vans (full-body and cut-away), and UTV/ATV's.
Type I[]
A Type I ambulance utilizes a truck chassis, with the patient module mounted on the back. There is a small gap between the cab and the module, with a small window or opening (called a pass-through or crawl-through) for communication between the driver and EMS personnel.
Type II[]
A Type II ambulance utilizes a van body, without a module. The body of the van itself is modified. The most common modification has been the addition of a raised roof.
Type III[]
A Type III ambulance utilizes a cutaway-van chassis. The cab is an integral part of the patient module. The connection between the cab and patient module can vary in appearance, but generally looks more like a doorway than a window. This allows for easier transfer of items from the patient compartment to the driver compartment and vice-versa.
Type IV[]
A Type IV ambulance is a full-featured mini-ambulance with high accessibility. It utilizes a golf cart, UTV, or ATV chassis. The patient module is primarily an open skid type unit, but can also be a fully enclosed module.
