Algonquin Highlands Fire Services

History

Algonquin Highlands was created in 2001 through the amalgamation of Stanhope Township and the Township of Sherborne, McClintock, Livingstone, Lawrence and Nightingale. Stanhope was covered by the Stanhope Township Fire Department and Sherborne et al. by two separate fire departments, the Dorset Fire Department and Oxtongue Lake Fire Department. After amalgamation, the three departments were maintained as separate entities until a full-time chief was hired in 2005. Amalgamation proceeded gradually.

All stations are dispatched by the Smiths Falls Fire Department and have station numbers that correspond with the Huntsville Fire Department and Lake of Bays Township Fire Department in Muskoka. The Dorset Fire Station is located in Muskoka District about 500 metres from the Haliburton / Muskoka boundary.
