Shepherd Field Air National Guard Base / Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport, formerly Shepherd Field and Martinsburg Municipal Airport, is a joint civil / military airport located 5 miles south of the central business district of Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia, in the tip of the state's Eastern Panhandle region in the lower Shenandoah Valley. The field, named after the Shepherd family who donated the land without charge, was first used in 1923 and in 1934 was sold to the Berkeley Aviation Club and deeded to the city of Martinsburg, Today, it covers an area of 998 acres at an elevation of 565 feet above mean sea level, and is owned and run by the Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport Authority (EWVRAA) which uses it mostly for general aviation. The EWVRAA entered into a joint-use agreement with the West Virginia Air National Guard which has had a presence at the adjacent Shepherd Field Air National Guard Base since 1955. The military part of the airport consists of about 380 acres and 34 buildings totaling 347,441 square feet and is home to the Guard's 167th Airlift Wing (167 AW) "Mountaineer Pride Worldwide". If activated to federal service, the Wing is gained by the United States Air Force Air Mobility Command. During peak surges, the installation population is about 1500 military personnel, consisting of both full-time Air Reserve Technicians (ART) and Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) and part-time Traditional Guardsmen (TG).
