Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport / General Mitchell Air National Guard Base, formerly Hamilton Airport and Milwaukee County Airport, is a joint civil / military airport located 5.8 miles south of downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The airport is named in honor of United States Army Brigadier General William Lendrum "Billy" Mitchell (December 29, 1879 – February 19, 1936), who was raised in Milwaukee and is often regarded as the father of the United States Air Force. Mitchell served in France during World War I and, by the conflict's end, commanded all American air combat units in that country. Mitchell received many honors following his death, including a commission by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a Major General. He is also the first person for whom an American military aircraft design, the North American B-25 Mitchell, is named. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport covers 2,180 acres and has five asphalt and concrete runways. Located on the eastern area of the airport property, General Mitchell Air National Guard Base is home to the 128th Air Refueling Wing (128nd ARW), an Air Mobility Command (AMC)-gained unit of the Wisconsin Air National Guard. Prior to 2007, a second military installation on the southwestern portion of the airport property was known as "General Mitchell Air Reserve Station." Pursuant to 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) action, the former AFRC facilities were turned over to the Air National Guard in 2007, resulting in the installation's renaming.
